In my research I wasn't able to find anything that explained how this originated...but no matter. It makes perfect sense to me that we would stop and acknowledge something that makes our beloved canine companions so darn happy.

Let's get baking! : )

Happy Halloween All!
Please remember to keep your canine friends safe this Halloween. If you'll have your dog wearing a costume be sure the dog can still easily move, see, etc. Remember that many dogs get spooked themselves by the people costumes. If you have a lot of trick or treaters at your home it may be best to keep Fido in another room so there is no risk of him bolting out the door.
If you have some time to today it isn't too late to whip up a batch of Halloween Dog Treats. These treats are peanut butter and pumpkin decorated with carob. Have a great HOWL-A-WEEN!

October is the American Human Association's Adopt a Dog month. If you are considering getting a dog please consider adopting one from a shelter.
I can't say enough about how much joy adopting a shelter dog can bring. Not only do you gain a loyal friend and companion, you also save a life - maybe even two lives. When you adopt a dog that means that shelter has space to rescue another dog in need.
There is a wide variety of dogs available at shelters and most shelters will work closely with you to find the dog that is just the right fit for your family and lifestyle.
Adopt a dog - you will be so glad you did!

Fireworks No Fun for Fido

A friendly reminder to treat your dog right this 4th of July. Fireworks may be fun for us but can be terrifying to our canine friends.

Humane Societies and Veterinarians see an increase in business during and following the 4th of July due to pets running away and/or being injured. Keep your pets safe this holiday.

Keep pets inside away from fireworks.

Keep windows closed and have music or the TV playing to mask the noise.

When they do need to go outside, accompany them at all times and keep them on a leash.

And,of course, mix up a batch of their favorite dog treats and cut out with a star cookie cutter. Once baked, add stripes to the treats using carob icing. And easy as that you've created a "stars and stripes" holiday dog treat.

Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July!

Be Kind to Animals Week

May 2nd through May 8th is American Humane’s Be Kind to Animals Week. Not only is it a great time to recognize the important role animals play in our lives, it is also an opportunity to think about what we can do to promote the health and well being of animals.

Here are a few ways we can be kind to animals all year round:

Adopt a pet from a rescue or shelter – and encourage others to do the same.

Report animal abuse- if you suspect an animal is being mistreated report it. Don’t assume someone else will.

Volunteer or donate to your area animal shelter

Spay or neuter your pet

To learn more visit American Humane.

P.S. Why not make some special time for your pets this week. Go for a nice walk, spend some extra time snuggling, or bake them up a yummy treat.
