Chicken Dog Treat Recipe

Chicken and Rice Crunchies

The inspiration for this chicken dog treat recipe came while I was enjoying the comfort of chicken and rice soup on a cold winter’s day.

This is one of my favorite healthy dog treat recipes. The chicken boosts the protein in these treats and the carrots provide the antioxidant beta-carotene. I like to think of these treats as comfort food for dogs. Give the recipe a try and see what your dogs think.

Chicken and Rice Crunchies

2 Cups + 1 Cup Rye Flour
1 Tsp Baking Powder
1 Cup finely diced carrots – Cooked
¼ Cup finely diced celery – Cooked
½ Cup finely diced cooked chicken breast
1 Cup Cooked brown rice*
1 Egg
2 Tablespoons Canola Oil

In a medium bowl combine the 2 cups rye flour and baking powder. Set aside.

Using a food processor mix together egg and canola oil. Add the chicken, carrot, celery, and brown rice and mix until well combined. Transfer to a large bowl. Mix in the rye flour/baking powder mixture. Add the remaining cup of rye flour a little at a time until a stiff dough forms. (Flour amounts will vary depending on moisture level in the carrots and rice.)

Place on floured surface and roll to desired thickness. Cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350 degrees. If rolled to 3/8" baking time is 30 minutes or until a golden brown.

Tip: After shutting off the oven I leave the dog biscuits in the oven for a couple hours to make sure they are completely dry and crunchy. Then they can be stored for a long time with out worrying about spoilage.

*Cook the brown rice in chicken broth to intensify the chicken flavor in the treats.
