Let's Throw a Dog Birthday Party!
Throwing a dog birthday party is a great way to celebrate our lives with dogs.
A dog birthday party is a wonderful way to honor our canine companions and is a fun family activity. This is something I would have loved as a kid. What a great way to create special childhood memories!
Good planning is the key to a successful party. We've provided some tips to ensure that all guests (both human and canine) have a fun and safe time. The Guest List
One of the first things you’ll need to consider is who to invite. You know your dog and family best. Do you plan on just having a small celebration with the dog of honor and close family and friends? Or do you picture having a full blown dog party, with other canine friends attending the festivities? A large party is best suited for dogs that are well socialized and used to lots of activity. Keep the following in mind when choosing the guest list:
- Make sure all dogs are accompanied by their human
- If there will be lots of kids make sure there are enough adults to supervise the kids and dogs.
Location
Where will you have the party? Obvious options include your own house or backyard. Other options include a dog training center or a dog daycare facility that may be willing to rent space. Having the party at a neutral location reduces the likelihood of any territory issues that sometimes arise with dogs. Here are some things to consider when deciding on a location:
- Provide a large enough space that dog guests feel comfortable
- Outdoor areas should be fenced in to ensure pet safety
- Make sure plenty of water is available for the dogs
- If it is going to be warm out make sure there is plenty of shade for all guests…both human and canine.
The Food
What would a party be without food! You will want to provide treats for both your human and canine guests. Keep the portions small for the canine companions. You don’t want to cause any upset tummies.
- Dog birthdays require dog birthday cake.
- Let the other dog owners know what treats will be provided in case there are special dietary needs. If you’re able, provide treats that their dog can have.
- In addition to dog cake, why not some “doggie bags”, containing a small amount of homemade dog treats for each guest.
- Consider a dog theme for your human guests: hot dogs, corn dogs, etc. Try human "Puppy Chow" for dessert.
