Grrreat Gourmet Dog Treat Recipes!
These Gourmet Dog Treat Recipes will add a little fun and fancy to your dog treat menu.
In my day-to-day baking I tend to stick with no frill dog treat recipes that don’t require a lot fuss. But when I have the time I enjoy baking up treats that allow me to tap into my creative side. Puppy Parmesan PretzelsOur dogs absolutely love these puppy pretzel treats. They’re fun to make but are very time consuming. I usually shape about half into pretzel shapes and the rest just cut into squares to make pretzel “nuggets”. This is a yeast dough so it will rise while baking. So if you want thin pretzels make sure to start out with really thin strips of dough. NOTE: The raw yeast dough can be harmful to dogs. Be sure to keep the uncooked dough away from your dogs.
1 Teaspoon Brown Sugar 2 Teaspoons Active Dry Yeast 2/3 Cup Warm Water 2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour ¼ Cup Non-Fat Dry Milk 1 Tablespoon Brewers Yeast ¼ Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese 1 Egg – beaten 2 Tablespoons Cooking Oil
Instructions Dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add in the oil, yeast mixture, and half of the beaten egg. Mix Well. Knead on a well floured surface. Place in oiled bowl, cover, and allow to rise until dough doubles in size. Roll out, cut dough into thin strips and shape in pretzels. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Reduce oven to 300. Brush pretzels with remaining egg mixture and bake an additional 10 minutes or until a golden brown. Shut oven off and leave pretzels in for a couple of hours or overnight to completely dry.
Pumpkin Barkscotti 1 ½ Cups Wheat flour ½ Cup all purpose flour ¼ Cup non-fat dry milk 1 teaspoon Cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking powder Pinch of ginger ¾ cup pumpkin ¼ cup molasses 1 egg ¼ cup water 2 Tablespoon oil ¼ cup chopped peanuts – unsalted (optional) Whisk together the dry ingredients (except peanuts). In a separate bowl beat together the pumpkin, molasses, egg, water, and oil. Mix in the dry mixture. Mix in the chopped peanuts. Form dough into two logs and flatten. Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 250. Slice into ½ slices. Put on baking sheet, bake for 20 minutes, turn, and bake another 20 minutes. When I made these I made one loaf of regular sized biscotti and two loafs of mini biscotti’s for smaller dogs. Adjust the baking times as necessary. The goal with the first baking time is to get a firm loaf that will hold together when sliced.
